TJYW Wrestler Expectations
Thomas Jefferson Youth Wrestling (TJYW) exists to teach our wrestlers the fundamentals of the sport and to provide them with the resources they need to reach their full potential as wrestlers. In order for each wrestler to fully develop into the best wrestler they can be, TJYW has developed these minimum expectations. All wrestlers are encouraged to exceed these minimum expectations.
Little Jaguars, Pre-K and K (1st & 2nd Year Wrestlers)
For first year wrestlers. 1x/week for 1 hour. Fun practices with a focus on coordination, balance, tumbling, and learning the sport through games (sumo, shoelace tag, etc.) After a discussion between the coaches and parents/guardians, there may be an opportunity for Little Jaguars to continue with the Novice group at the conclusion of the session.
- Attend TJYW practice once per week for two months.
- Learn a penetration step.
- Learn how to move in your stance.
- Learn a double leg.
- Learn a sprawl and spin behind.
- Learn how to stand up off of the bottom.
- Learn how to turn your opponent with a wrist and half.
- ENJOY LEARNING TO WRESTLE!
Novice Group, 1st-3rd grade (2+ Year Wrestlers)
1 hour and 15 minute practices 2x/week. Most of these wrestlers will have participated in our Little Jaguars program. Dynamic and fun workout. Age appropriate exercises for building strength, coordination, balance, and flexibility. Wrestlers will continue to learn through play, fundamental skill development, and increased competition. Wrestlers in Novice will understand the basic rules and fundamental techniques of wrestling. There will be opportunities to wrestle in both low-pressure situations and Keystone League matches. Additional optional tournaments are presented to those who are ready to take that next step.

- Attend 4 of 6 Keystone League Matches
- Attend Keystone League Tournament/TOC (if qualified)
- Highly Recommend attending 1 First Year/Novice Tournament
- Before entering into an open tournament consider talking with a member of our staff.
- Attend PA Junior Wrestling Area VII Qualifier
- Attend Keystone Tournament Regional Qualifier

Open Group, 4th-6th grade (3+ Year Wrestlers)
1 hour and 15 minute practices 2-3x/week. Practices move at a faster pace but still focus on the basic techniques as the Novice group while adding additional skills as the season progresses. The Advanced group will participate in both the Keystone League matches and weekend open tournaments. Additionally, Advanced group wrestlers should continue wrestling through the post season qualifiers (PJW and Keystones) and give a strong consideration to Spring Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling.

- Attend Keystone League Tournament/TOC (if qualified)
- Attend 4-5 open tournaments of their choosing
- Attend PA Junior Wrestling Area VII Qualifier
- Attend Keystone Tournament Regional Qualifier
- ENJOY LEARNING TO WRESTLE, BEING COMPETITIVE, AND DEVELOPING SOLID TRAINING HABITS LIKE GOAL SETTING, MENTAL TRAINING, AND PROPER NUTRITION.
*All wrestlers will receive a team gift at the end-of-season banquet. Wrestlers that meet the stated minimum expectations for their experience level will qualify for additional merit gifts.
